PROFESSIONAL BOUNDARIES & ETHICS

  • Discuss the challenges of maintaining professional boundaries in highly emotional contexts when clients need extra support

  • Learn about approaches that may assist in your decision-making when you are faced with challenging questions related to ethics and professional boundaries

  • Examine the inherent power dynamics between newcomers and service providers.

Background

Discussions about professional boundaries are usually framed around legalities and codes of ethics. However, very often, service providers have to navigate situations that take place the "gray area": where there are no clear rules, or where rules may exist but conflict with our personal values. It can be very challenging for service providers to navigate these "ethical dilemmas", especially in highly emotional or stressful situations.

  • Expose the nuances that make navigating ethical dilemmas difficult;

  • Engage in a discussion about some of the professional boundary and ethical challenges that service providers are experiencing;

  • Provide a tool (specifically, a list of guiding questions) that can be used to help service providers to navigate their decision-making when faced with ethical dilemmas;

  • Seek input on the guiding questions and make additions as recommended;

  • Explore power imbalances between newcomers and service providers, including potential consequences;

  • Consider key ethical principles and how they can be practiced;

  • Learn about the effects of burn-out and tangible ways to practice self-care.
