EFFECTIVE OUTREACH STRATEGIES

  • Explore ways of finding and effectively outreaching to vulnerable newcomers

  • Learn about various outreach tools, including social media

  • Learn about creative outreach strategies that work

  • Explore the role of community engagement in outreach

  • Create an outreach plan

Objectives

  • Bring the need for inclusivity and accessibility to the forefront of outreach.

  • Reflect on the power dynamics involved in outreach and how power imbalances can be minimized.

  • Encourage participants to aim for genuine community engagement.

  • Provide concrete ideas of different methods of outreach.

  • Provide information about when social media outreach is useful, different forms of technology that can be used for outreach, and privacy and security concerns related to using technology.

  • Stress the importance of research in creating an outreach plan.

  • Provide the tools for participants to create an outreach plan before outreaching to help them to build an effective outreach strategy, organize their thoughts, assist them to stay “goal-oriented”, use the most effective and inclusive forms of outreach, and evaluate each outreach strategy and tactic used.

Outreach is a fundamental aspect of many jobs, but because service providers working with vulnerable newcomers usually have very little time for outreach, the result is often the under-use of programs or services that could be very helpful for vulnerable newcomers. It can also be extremely difficult to “find” and access the vulnerable newcomers that could benefit from services and programs.
